Success does not come to you - you go to it

A number of public service organisations are taking the opportunity of tough economic times to build on proven success in enhancing their mobile working, cutting down on paper and back office rework, and improving conditions and productivity for mobile users.

Since the last GTN Newport City Council have increased their investment in NetMotion Mobility XE with a follow-on order, to build on the success of their initial investment. Similarly, Derby Homes has placed an add-on order, as have South East Water for laptops and South West Water for another 150 Windows Mobile handhelds (to bring the total to about 550 handhelds supported by Mobility XE.) Read on to see what organisations like these have been able to add to their mobile working strategies based on proven experience.

What experienced organisations have added to their list of principles for a successful mobile working strategy

In pursuing transformation project, mobile working plays a key part in achieving the goals that public service organisations set for themselves. These range from cutting down on paper and back office rework, improving life productivity, decreasing carbon footprint through mobile and home working - all whilst paying heed to regulatory demands like GSi CoCo.

When looking at organisations that have increased their investment in NetMotion Mobility XE with follow-on orders in the last few weeks, like GTN Newport City Council, Derby Homes, South East Water and South West Water, the facilities offered by NetMotion Mobility XE has allowed them to adopt more aggressive principles for their mobile working strategy.

Some excerpts from the experience of these organisations :

  • Mobile workers should enjoy the same user experience irrespective of location or network type. They should not be constrained by IT systems from working in the most effective way operationally.
    • They should log in the same way whether in the office or not
    • Applications should also behave in the same way - no retraining should be required
    • Sufficient granularity should exist in the management system to control access to ensure compliance with security policies and GSi CoCo
    • Users should be able to use any network or connection mechanism available to them in pursuit of efficient working
    • Users should not need to know which network they are using, only that they are connected and everything is working
  • Business Systems and Applications should be independent of connection medium - whether user are in the office or mobile
  • End users should not be burdened with additional tasks to accommodate security or access policies - these should be catered for in a fully automated way by the infrastructure (transparently to the end user)
  • Detailed analytics reporting should be available by user, by application and by network type to offer a complete audit and management understanding
  • Management of the device should be automated and transparent to the end user, and performed in a way that does not impact business productivity
    • This includes ensuring that preventative measures like anti-virus are present, up to date and active on the device
    • Further, that any updates are sensitive to the user's connection type and does not get in the way of the user getting their job done
    • Mobile users should not be impacted by roaming across network types, or when a connection drops out for any reason
    • Mobile users should enjoy single sign on - they should not have to log in repeatedly whenever a connection fails
    • Applications should survive and connection drops without loss of data

These principles would have either been impossible, or at best been difficult and very costly (in time and money) to achieve with their existing secure mobile working approach.

In contrast, the organisations above have been able to realise these principles with a no cost evaluation, prove them in their first implementation and rollout, and then build on this success with follow on orders. (As have other public service organisations such as Bedfordshire Police, Birmingham City Council, Bournemouth Borough Council, Cherwell District Council, Dorset County Council, Durham City Council, Dwr Cymru Welsh Water, Harrow Borough Council, Airwave Solutions, London Fire Brigade, Newcastle on Tyne City Council, NHS Hertfordshire, NHS Mid Essex, Oxfordshire County Council, Partnerships for Schools, West Oxfordshire District Council, Westminster City Council and Strathclyde Partnership for Transport (SPT).)

The end result has been achieving reach and scope of mobile working well beyond their original plans, at a lower cost and offering greater effectiveness for their mobile users.

If Action is the foundation to all success, is it time you considered a no cost evaluation so that your organisation can gauge the benefits?
